Round 4 - v- Maitland
Maitland def Cessnock
Saturday 4th May 2013

Fresh from the bye, Cessnock travelled to Maitland Sportsground eager to take the two points from the Pickers. With the inclusion on Brendan Williams and Bradie Smith from the Knights SG Ball squad, confidence was high in the camp.
Unfortunately things did not go to plan. Cessnock kicked out on the full to start the game and from the ensuing set Maitland scored their first try. Cessnock then kicked out on the full again but a Maitland error allowed a swing in momentum in which Cessnocks Jacob Garland scored their first try. Both teams went tit for tat with tries with the halftime scoreline 10 all in a very even contest.
The second half started with both teams completing their sets and building pressure but Maitland were first to score after the break leading 16 10. Sustained pressure allowed Josh Kiem to score next to the posts. With the scores now locked at 16 16, the game was always going down to the wire. A dubious penalty awarded to Maitland in front of the posts gifted Maitland an easy two points and with three minutes remaining, this was the final nail in Cessnocks coffin. Overall a disappointing performance with ill discipline and the number of unforced errors not helping the teams cause.
Best for Cessnock were Josh Kiem, Oliver Powell, Ryley Thomas and Brendan Williams.

ROUND 2 - Cessnock -v- Macquarie
Cessnock def  Macquarie
Saturday 20th April 2013

On a rain soaked Cessnock Sportsground, a gallant Macquarie side arrived full of confidence keen to take the two points home with them. Fortunately for Cessnock, we were just as determined to stop this.
After a great first half, Cessnock led 20 4 at halftime scoring four tries of which two were converted. A great defensive effort at the start of the second half saw the Cessnock boys repel numerous Macquarie attacking raids which ultimately gave the Cessnock boys extra confidence.
Cessnock took their opportunity when they had the footy and scored a long range try. Cessnocks resilient defence continued with Macquarie unable to break the strong Goanna line. A great team effort in ordinary conditions enabled the final score to be 24 - 4

Best players were Jordan Stratton, Dan Jurd, Ryley Thomas, Oliver Powell and Eli Levido

ROUND 1 - Cessnock -v- Western Suburbs
 Cessnock def Wests
Sunday 14th April 2013

On a warm Autumn day, the Cessnock Goannas U18 Team travelled to Harker Oval, Lambton for their 1st round fixture against Wests. The Wests team was bolstered during the week by the signings of Josh Birch and Jacob Gagai from the Newcastle Knights SG Ball Squad in addition to the 5 west players already chosen in the squad.
We started poorly by not completing our first set however Wests didnt either so that released some very early pressure. Cessnock were first to score by Ryley Thomas who received a nice offload from prop Robert Tuilatu. Eli Levido kicked the goal and we led 6-0 after 6 minutes. Directly after this could be described as our worst period of the game, we completed 1 from our next 5 sets which totally swung the momentum of the game. Wests were able score 2 converted tries and a penalty goal which put them in front 14-6 midway thru the first half. Luckily Wests were penalised for a double movement which again shifted the momentum in Cessnocks favour as we were able to complete 6/7 for the rest of the half. In form second rower Jordan Stratton scored off a great set piece and Eli Levido converted for Cessnock to trail 14-12 at halftime.
In the second half we started strongly with Ryley Thomas returning the favour to Robert Tuilatu who crossed after some great second phase footy. We were starting to play some good attacking footy on the back of some decent field position. Joe Woodbury scored not long after and Eli Levido converted again for Cessnock to lead 24-12 after 12 minutes of the second half.
As Cessnock continued to build pressure on Wests line, the skills of the Wests players shone as they reclaimed a short kick close to their try line. In the ensuing set, Wests charged up field and scored a converted try to trail 18-12 with 10 to go. Fortunately for Cessnock, Wests allowed us to score from our next set through Jordan Stratton with another Eli levido conversion with Cessnock now leading 30-18 with 5 to go.
Wests tried a short kick off which they regathered, this cheap turnover enabled Wests to score in the corner and with the sideline conversion successful, Cessnock finished the game as winners 30-24.
Special mention to U17 players Sam Apthorpe and Reed Hugo who played off the bench after their games on Saturday.
