A home game Major Semi Final in front of our home town goanna supporters was a huge boost to the 1st grade team in our bid for a Grand Final appearance. The support that the local community of Cessnock give is massive lift to the team and this was truly evident on Saturday afternoon as the Goeys ran out winners 19 to 18 over Wests.
In a game where West dominated field position for large periods of the game, our defence and completion rate was always going to be tested. To our credit we stood tall and defended with pride and completed consistently out of our own end of the field.
To be down at half time 8 to 6 and into the breeze was a real positive for the side and gave us a great deal of confidence for a strong 2nd half performance. Once again we were tested and held strong against a powerful West side. A couple of tries and successful conversions along with a field goal allowed us to lead 19 to 12 with about 13 minutes to play. A late try to West gave them an opportunity to win the game late, but fittingly on that back of our defence we hung on and won the game 19 to 18.
It was a terrific team effort by the whole squad and tough to nominate who were the best, but no one could argue that Terrence Seu Seu, Riley Brown, Brendan Hlad, Brendan Worth, Alec Fata and Corey Barber were some of the stand out performers on the day.
We now get a week off to see who we play. The weeks rest will be great and give us an opportunity to freshen up and recover from any niggles. We can than give our all and hopefully come away with a well deserved Major Premiership and fitting finale to an already successful season.
