Newcastle Rugby League: The Clubs, the Grounds and How the Season Works
The Newcastle Rugby League is the Hunter's top local rugby league competition, running since 1910. In 2026 its first grade, the Denton Engineering Cup, had 10 clubs playing 16 rounds from April to August, with the top five going to a finals series. South Newcastle won the 2026 grand final 18-16 in extra time over Maitland.
This is one of the oldest local rugby league competitions in Australia, and its record is the Hunter’s own: 114 premierships decided since 1910, with no competition in 1917, 1918 and 2021.
Which clubs play in the Newcastle Rugby League?
Ten clubs played first grade in 2026, from Port Stephens in the north to The Entrance on the Central Coast. The club list and home grounds below come from the league’s official 2026 Denton Engineering Cup draw. Premiership counts are first grade titles, cross-checked between the NSWRL’s competition honour roll (which runs to 2017) and the Wikipedia competition record for later years.

Title counts include premierships won under earlier club names (Maitland as the Pumpkin Pickers, Macquarie as Toronto Workers in 1991). *The NSWRL honour roll credits South Newcastle with 1919, a split season; Wikipedia credits a combined Central-South side and counts 12. Every decider is listed on our grand finals page. Several foundation clubs, such as Northern Suburbs and Waratah-Mayfield, no longer play first grade in this competition.
The table is uneven for a reason. Four clubs (Wests, Maitland, Souths and Lakes) hold 61 of the titles between them, and the two newest entries, The Entrance (first season 2021) and the Northern Hawks (2023), are still chasing their first.
How does a Newcastle Rugby League season work?
A season is a home-and-away draw followed by a five-team finals series. In 2026 that meant:

Dates are from the official 2026 draw. The 2026 season had 16 rounds and no byes, down from 18 rounds with two byes in 2025, so every competition point had to be won on the field, as Newcastle Weekly’s ladder analysis set out. Five teams make the finals.
Most clubs field more than one side on game day. Besides first grade there are reserve grade, a third grade, an under-19s competition and, since 2024, a women’s premiership, according to the competition record.
Who has won the recent grand finals?
Maitland dominated the early 2020s and South Newcastle stopped the run in 2026. Every decider back to 1910 is on our grand finals page.

Maitland’s 2025 win over Cessnock made it the first club to win four consecutive Newcastle premierships (NSWRL, 22 September 2025). The Newcastle Herald reported Souths’ extra-time win on 6 September 2026.

The league publishes its draw on its own website, newcastlerugbyleague.com.au, and live scores, ladders and team lists run through the national PlayRugbyLeague system that the NSWRL links to. Games are also streamed by BarTV Sports, which the grand final records link to.
The NSWRL’s own competition page still describes the 2018 season (eight clubs, Macquarie as reigning premiers) when checked on 24 September 2026. Treat the league’s own site and the current season draw as the authority, not a summary page.
What is Cessnock’s record in the Newcastle Rugby League?
Cessnock has won nine first grade premierships: 1941, 1950, 1954, 1955, 1960, 1972, 1977, 2003 and 2020. The club traces its formation to 1911, and it first appears on the NSWRL honour roll in 1932, as runner-up to Eastern Suburbs. The full record is on our Cessnock page.
The other side of that record is a long list of near misses. The NSWRL honour roll names Cessnock runner-up 19 times between 1932 and 2014, and the club lost the 2019 and 2025 deciders as well. The 2020 title ended a 17-year wait after 2003, as the Cessnock Advertiser noted before the 2025 grand final.

Is the Newcastle Rugby League the same as the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League?
No. They are two separate competitions. The Newcastle Rugby League is the senior district competition covered on this page.
The Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League is a community competition for local clubs, formed in 2006 from the merger of the Maitland and Coalfields and Lower Hunter competitions, with several grades and dozens of teams, according to its competition record.
